5-year-old living with rare disorder

SHREWSBURY— William Plourde is living proof that donating blood really can save lives.

The 5-year-old was born with a spontaneous gene mutation that was discovered when he was 9 months old. Doctors determined he had Diamond Blackfan anemia, a rare condition that prevents his bone marrow from making red blood cells.
